FAQ

Choosing the right job for your boat.

Not sure which service you need? These answers usually settle it. If not, contact us.

Synthetic or natural teak: which should I choose?

Synthetic teak needs no oiling or sanding, just a rinse with fresh water. Natural teak is the real wood, with the feel underfoot and the care that come with it. We bring real samples to the inspection and tell you honestly which suits the way you use your boat.

What is EVO Decking synthetic teak?

EVO Decking is the synthetic teak we are certified to install, and in our experience the best-looking and most realistic there is. It is UV stabilised for the Adriatic sun, grips underfoot even when wet, and comes in eight deck tones with black, white or silver caulking.

Can my teak deck be restored, or does it need replacing?

We measure the remaining slat thickness first. If there is enough wood, restoration brings it back. If some slats are too thin, we replace just those, and only a deck that is worn through needs to come up entirely.

How do I know my teak deck needs re-caulking?

Look at the black seams between the slats. If the caulking has gone hard, is cracking or is pulling away from the slat edges, water can get under the deck. Small failures can be repaired locally; when seams are failing all over, a full re-caulk is the better job.

How do I get my teak deck ready for the season?

Pre-season preparation is a deep clean across the grain, a light sanding back to fresh teak, repairs to loose plugs and failed seams, and a protective treatment for the summer ahead. Book it early: October to May is our busiest time.

Is pressure washing bad for a teak deck?

Yes. A pressure washer or a stiff brush tears out the soft wood between the growth rings, leaving the grain ridged and the deck thinner. Wash teak gently, across the grain, with a soft brush and plenty of water.

Does the boat have to come out of the water?

Usually not. We come to the boat wherever it already is, afloat at its berth or ashore on a dry berth. Each service page shows where that job is done: on board, in our workshop, or both.

Can you build a passerelle for my catamaran?

Yes. We build wooden passerelles to measure for catamarans and sailboats, for stainless-steel bases or standard fittings. Each is made in our workshop and sealed against sun and salt.

Do you varnish handrails and brightwork on board?

Yes. Handrails, trim, doors and other brightwork are stripped, sanded to bare wood and varnished in multiple coats at your berth. Parts that can be taken off are varnished in our workshop.

Which woods do you use on boats?

Teak for decks and for anything that lives outside, because it lasts in salt and sun. Iroko, mahogany and oak for passerelles, handrails, trim and made-to-measure pieces.

Can several jobs go into one quote?

Yes. We handle every piece of wood on board, so a deck, new handrails and a fresh coat of varnish can be quoted and scheduled together.
